While skin thickness varies by region, the epidermis is composed of approximately 30 layers of cells, stacked upon each other like bricks. Like a brick wall, cement runs between the cells in effect acting like glue. Epidermal cells are shed daily through the body's natural means of exfoliation. So invisible is the process that every 28 days the epidermis is completely replaced without notice.
There are a number of reasons to exfoliate, all of them ultimately have the same goal; to achieve a healthier appearing complexion. It helps speed up the elimination of dead skin cells and allows moisturisers, serums and masks to penetrate more easily.
In a congested skin, exfoliation helps unplug stubborn blackheads.
In an aging skin, exfoliation increases the cell turnover and the mechanical action helps to stimulate the laying of the foundation substances in the deeper layers of the skin.
The Dermatech Treatment System includes a mechanical exfoliating cream as well as chemical exfoliation through the use of glycolic creams (see the Treat Category). Both forms of exfoliation are essential.
