Skin Cycling - What is it and should I be doing it?

Posted April 4, 2023

Have you seen the recent trend called 'skin cycling'? If you're a fan of TikTok, then you've probably heard it mentioned. And to be honest, a lot of us were already doing it before we even knew it was a thing!

"Skin cycling" is a skincare routine that involves alternating different products and routines on different days of the week to allow the skin to "rest" and recover. This approach is believed to prevent the skin from becoming too accustomed to a specific routine, which can lead to decreased efficacy and potential irritation.

Some potential benefits of skin cycling may include:
Improved skin health
By alternating products and routines, skin cycling may help to prevent over-exfoliation and other forms of irritation, which can lead to improved skin health over time.
Better product absorption
When the skin is given time to "rest" between product applications, it may be more receptive to active ingredients, which can lead to better product absorption and more noticeable results.
Reduced risk of sensitivity
By alternating between different products and routines, skin cycling may help to reduce the risk of sensitivity and irritation that can occur when using the same products consistently over time.
Customised approach
Skin cycling allows individuals to customize their skincare routine based on their unique skin type, concerns, and goals, which can lead to a more personalized approach and better results.

Overall, while there is limited research on the effectiveness of skin cycling, many people have reported positive results from this approach. As with any skincare routine, it's important to choose products and routines that are appropriate for your skin type and if you need any help, reach out to your Beauty Therapist or complete our online consultation form

Here's an example of a Dermatech Skin Cycling Routine:
Day One - Glycolic Cream (Chemical exfoliation)
Day Two - Active A Serum (Massive anti-oxidant boost)
Day Three - Deep Hydrating Moisturiser
Day Four - Deep Hydrating Moisturiser
Day Five - Start again

As we tend to use our most 'active' products at night time, this skin cycling routine follows a night routine. Continue your morning routine as per usual, and don't forget your sunscreen during the day.
